Radio Observations of Algol . II . Computation of Close Stellar Encounters

چکیده
We present here new astrometric measurements of Algol's position made with Very Long Baseline Interferometry. Using these measurements, along with a new estimate of the node of the inner binary and other orbital elements from the literature, we compute a new proper motion, with uncertainties six times less than those of Hipparcos. We compute the trajectories of Algol (using the new proper motion) and of Gliese 710, and discuss the various sources of uncertainty. We nd that it is essential to include Galactic rotation and oscillation about the midplane in order to accurately compute not only the distance of closest encounter, but also on which side of the Sun a star will pass. Finally, we compute a minimum distance criterion for individual stellar encounters to have an eeect on the observed distribution of comets. We nd the cross section for interaction for the relatively high mass to velocity ratio of Algol is an order of magnitude greater than the cross section of the inner Oort cloud. Nonetheless we nd that both the Algol and Gliese 710 encounters are too distant to produce any extra observable comets. We also compute the encounter parameters of the nearest stellar system, Cen-Proxima Cen, which we nd to be gravitionally bound. The parameters of its closest approach are similar to those of Gliese 710, and we expect no extra observable comets to result from the encounter. We note that a reanalysis of the Hipparcos data is needed to search for other potential close encounters.

The structure of Algol ’ s corona : a consistent scenario for the X - ray and radio emission
We present a systematic analysis of the four known large X-ray flares detected to date on the eclipsing binary system Algol, using an approach based on hydrodynamic simulations of decaying flaring loops including sustained heating. This method yields, for the large BeppoSAX Algol flare of Aug. 1997 (where a geometrical estimate of the size of the flaring region is available) a more reliable siz...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

متن کاملRadio Emission from Algol
We report dual circular polarization VLBA observations of Algol made at orbital phases 0.22{0.30 using a diierential phase referencing technique. The ux density of Algol varied from 10{20 mJy during the observations. The radio maps show a double-lobe source separated by 1.6 mas (1.4 times the K star diameter). Although the total emission is only weakly circularly polarized, the individual lobes...

We present radio interferometric observations of the EA2 Algol-type binary system V505 Sagitarii made with the ATNF Compact Array at 6 cm and 3.6 cm over one orbital cycle (1.18 days). We obtained a strong detection of the source (1.5 mJy at 6 cm and 1.4 mJy at 3.6 cm) and derive a brightness temperature for the emitting region of T b 2.7 10 9 K, a magnetic eld strength of 17 G < B < 170 G and ...
